Saturation {teaching photographer in suwanee georgia}

I spoke with new photographer today about saturation today and she had some questions. I thought I would share with you all what we discussed. In my experience, if one person has a question about a topic at least 10 other people have those same questions! So here goes...
Saturation - Color saturation is used to describe the intensity of color in the image.
De-Saturate: To take out the intensity of color in the image.
Sometimes photographers will intentioally overly saturate to pop the color in an image. Sometimes photographer will intentionally de-saturate an image to create mood. A lot of images taken in the 70's were de-saturated! :)
One thing I would personally stay away from is de-saturting skin tones. It makes people look dull and lifeless. If you want the desaturated look on your image you can use a hue/saturated adjustment layer in photoshop and then mask back in your skin tones to taste.
Below I have shown an image saturated 4 different ways. I did this by adding a hue/saturation adjustment layer to each image and pulling the saturation out with the slider to the left.
As you can see, when you completely de-saturate an image, you end up with no color. These images are referred to as a greyscale or a black & white images. I do not recommend achieving black and white images by pulling out all of the saturation. Remember light has a color. Photography is the art of painting with light so, If you rid an image of all color....you are making the light in your image colorless and flat as well. As you can see a completely de-saturated image results in a flat B&W's because the image has been rid of all color.
I prefer to use the channel mixer or a gradient map for B&W's. They keep the "color" of light in tact and therefore give your black and whites more dimension.

Meet one of my very best friends, Britain, and her little one, Drew! Drew is due this coming wednesday and I just can't wait to meet her! Remember this sweet family! I was honored to capture little Noah's time in the womb here! It's funny to me how the larger the family, the more well behaved the children seem to be! The sweet Deming family welcomed me and all of my props into their home and we had a wonderful time! The kids were sooooo polite, sweet and fun! It must be true that larger families produce more well rounded adults....look at me, I come from a family of 7 girls...and well... :)

The session with the Nicholson family was such a whirlwind! This is my niece Meagan. She and I are 15 years apart, so I have some wonderful memories of her when she was a little baby. My sister Chrissy always had her in these sweet hats that showed off her precious face and rosy cheeks! I cannot believe that she is a senior this year at North Gwinnett High School. Tears come to my eyes thinking about how fortunate I am to have watched her grow into this amazingly gentle, sincere and devoted woman of God. It makes my heart sing to watch her consistently seek the Lord first in her life and the Joy of His promises are shown clearly in her eyes! I love that I have, someone 15 years my jr., constantly challenging me to be more dedicated in my time with the Lord, not with her words but with her life. We have so many precious memories with this sweet Meagan, and WOW...we have so many more to make still! Thank you Father for this wonderful blessing in my life!

DEMING FAMILY {Duluth Georgia Maternity Photography}

The Deming family and I met up in Duluth Georgia for a Maternity session before Baby number 4 made his arrival! Here is a sneak peak of baby number 4 (Noah)...just because I can't stand the suspense!

Ok, now that I have put the cart before the horse....back to business!

Jennifer warned me that a photo shoot with 3 children could be, shall we say, a little nuts! So, I was totally expecting over the top chaos...however I was greeted by 3 of the most well behaved, polite and kind children! Man, I sound like Mary Popins! A few weeks ago, I was honored to be the special guest on the Jpeg 2 Raw podcast. During my college days, I was the host of a morning radio show through Clear Channel! I so loved doing radio, and this podcast took me back and made me realize how much I truly missed doing it!

I was excited about the show from the day Mike Howard asked me if I would be a guest. I just LOVE helping others with their photography questions! It enriches me.

Throughout my photography career I have come across two kinds of photographers. We shall call them LARGE LENNY and SMALL SALLY.

LARGE LENNY views every other person who picks up a camera as a threat to his own photography career and in turn, is on the defense when someone asks for any tips or guidance in with their craft. He may be prideful, thinking he does not want to waste his time with someone who "just picked up their camera and wants to be a photographer" or he may be fearful that the knowledge he shares could equip another to be better than he is. Either way, his influence is narrow and that is exactly how he likes it.

SMALL SALLY is an open book, looking to edify and build up others who are trying to get their foot into the world of photography. Why would she give away all her secrets, you ask? Because she understands that in photography there truly are no secrets. The difference between one photographer and another is the photographer, not the equipment they use, or the f-stop they choose...but the person that they are!

When I began my journey in photography I was so thirsty for knowledge and spent A LOT of time searching for other experienced photographers who I could learn from. I was scorned by many a LARGE LENNY and so truly blessed by a certain SMALL SALLY. I came upon Small Sally and was in awe over her talents. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found that she listed for other photographers, exactly how she executed her shots and what she used for props. Her generosity was refreshing and so I strive to be like SMALL SALLY! The Jpeg 2 Raw show gives photographers an opportunity to be generous with their knowledge and experience. I am truly grateful for this show!

Ready for a fun photography analogy? The word "aperture" means "opening". This opening, pertaining to cameras, is in the lens. The size of the aperture is controlled by the lens. An open aperture allows light to come in. A closed aperture, blocks light out.

As photographers we have control over the aperture. We can open the aperture, allowing more light in. We can close the aperture, allowing less or no light in. See diagram below:

As people we have control over our aperture, as well. This opening, pertaining to people, is in the heart. The size of the aperture is controlled by the heart. An open aperture allows people to come in. A closed aperture, blocks people out.

Stay with me.

The thing that is MOST confusing about aperture is how it it measured. The technical term for how aperture is measured in photography is called "f-stops". The SMALLER the f-stop number, the more WIDE OEPN the aperture, and the LARGER the f-stop number, the more NARROW the aperture. (see diagram above)

Just like aperture, in order to keep our influence wide, we must consider ourselves small!

Here is where LARGE LENNY and SMALL SALLY are on the heart aperture scale.

Small Sally is humble at heart and generous with her knowledge and so her influence on others is wide!

Large Lenny is prideful at heart and stingy with his knowledge. Wracked by fear, he closes up and so his influence on others in narrow. See diagram below:

These sweet boys belong to my dear friend and former office assistant, Abby! Oh how I miss her and I am certainly missing watching these boys grow up! They have moved out of state and we are all pulling to get them back in Georgia soon! Jack (big brother) is sweeter than a tall glass of sweet tea and his southern accent reveals that no matter where he is brought up, Mamma is raising these boys to be good, Godly, Southern gentlemen...just like their daddy! I got a call from out of state looking for a photographer. Lucy wanted to surprise her husband with a image of their children who were all going to be in Suwanee in just a few weeks! As we were ironing out all the details, Lucy and I realized that the family I was going to be photographing were my next door neighbors! :) It's a small world! :)

If I were to pick the #1 question my clients ask it would be "so what do we wear"? Since I am not standing looking into your closet, I have put together a simple guide to help your family look co-hesive without ending up looking like this:

FAMILY SESSION ATTIRE

Please do not match, Instead pick a unifying element to tie all your families outfits together! Like plaid for example:

HA HA! JUST KIDDING!

Now Seriously, In the outfits below the unifying theme is pink and brown. No outfit exactly matches another, but they all flow together seamlessly! Using different textures and layering your clothing adds interest to the overall look! Don't forget accessories!

TIP: The day before the photo shoot make sure you have complete outfits laid out for every member of your family. This way, Daddy can help get everyone dressed, while Mommy has a moment to make sure that her make up is applied and she is ready to go!

All white's and creams in photographs is only a no-no when the outfits match! However, it can make a stunning, unifying element to a session when you add lots of layers and textures!

Here is one example of how to select great outfits for your family portraits! Thanks to my wonderful clients, the Rybos Family, for showing us all how it's done!

NEWBORN SESSION WHAT TO WEAR

For newborn sessions the rules are different! All clothing for the parents should be in neutral, solid colors (white, black & creams) keeping the sweet baby the focus of the image. Mommies, make your tops be either tube tops or strappy tank tops, so we can get some beautiful skin to skin images of you and the baby.

Daddies, if you dare to bare...nothing is more beautiful than the strength of daddies shoulders and chest next to a fragile baby. But do not fret, if you are not comfortable with this, a solid black t-shirt works great for dads!

Newborns, I am afraid I am going to ask you to wear hand-me-down GENES for your first photo-shoot ever! Newborns are best photographed in this:

I was so privileged to meet the Rainwater family a few months back! Here is Jennifer & Jason's maternity session! When I got the call saying that little Carson had arrived and that he was a big boy, I knew that getting them into the studio right away was very important. As newborns gain weight, they stay awake longer, so whenever I have a newborn come to visit me that weighs over 8 lbs at birth, I know that keeping them asleep is more challenging. Little James Carson was no exception! This was my longest session to date at 7 hours strong! I did not press my shutter until about 3 hours into the session! Newborn Photographers must be part photographer, part baby whisperer!
Oh what a sweet little man Carson is...all the time invested is totally worth it when you see the images we captured below! Thank you Rainwater family for allowing me to be a part of such a magical time in your lives!

I met the Seay family out at Buford Dam to capture their time together! What a sweet family. They have moved from place to place with Dad's job and you can really see & feel the bond that this family has. There is certainly something to be said about moving. It creates a reliance on each other that you can't duplicate! Looking at their images inspires me. My own family is the midst of a move (no worries, we are staying in the SUWANEE area. We are currently living with my in laws until we can find a new home that suits our needs! It's an exciting and trying time and watching the Seay family interact reminds me to pull closer to my family during this time of transition! God has a plan and part of that plan is to make our family unit a stronger witness for Him. Thanks to the Seay Family for a great photo session and a great lesson learned!

I have been so excited to share this newborn session with you! Little Sofie came to see me with her mom, dad & grandparents and we just had a wonderful time! We soon realized that we were all believers in Jesus Christ, and so this session took on a whole new tone...we were not just photographing a new baby, we were documenting the beautiful wonder of God's handiwork! KRAFT TWINS - GOD IS SO GOOD! {PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION GIVEAWAY} {GWINNETT GEORGIA CHILDREN'S PHOTOGRAPHER}

I met Desire, the twin's mommy, at a doctors appointment for my son, Weston. We were both wheeling in double strollers through narrow hallways, and Desire seemed to know where she was going, so I asked if I could follow her! We sat and chatted until our names were called. Our meeting was designed by God for sure, because we soon found that we were both from the same hometown (Lynchburg Virginia) and that her mom and my sister were dear friends!
Then we started to scratch the surface of Desire's story.
Desire and her husband were just relocated to Ga for work during her last month of pregnancy. I may get some of these details out of order but also during this time her husband found out that he had cancer and was undergoing treatments and Desire had complications with the pregnancy and almost lost her life. They had rented an apartment for awhile so they could acclimate themselves with the area before buying a home. Right after bringing their newborn TWINS home from the hospital, they were informed that the apartment had a mold issue and that they were being located to a hotel. The sweet baby twins were premies and were undergoing surgeries, doctors visits, needles....
This family needed prayer! Prayer for strength, prayer for peace in the midst of all of these storms.
SO that is what I did.
Months later I made contact with Desire through Facebook! I was running a competition for a free session! Desire had wanted professional portraits of the babies for quite some time, but with all that the family was going through it just never worked out. She entered my giveaway and also sent ALL OF HER FRIENDS to enter the giveaway on her behalf! It was crazy how many people entered, telling me how wonderful Desire and her family are and how much they deserved this free session!
Once again, God took over, because while I was drawing the name of the winner, each name I pulled was the name of someone who had entered on Desire's behalf! It was clear that Desire should be the winner!
Below are the resulting images from our time together!
God has done so much through this family. Desire's husband is in remission! PRAISE GOD! And her babies could not be more precious and far from looking like they were ever premies! Just check out those scrumptious rolls!
I feel so blessed to have this wonderful family in my life and I look forward to photographing these sweet ones in the years to come!

Hudson was Mommy & Daddy's winter blessing. He was born during that crazy snow storm we had this winter. Now that things have warmed up, we were excited to get Hudson in the great outdoors and play! I love spending time with my family in Lynchburg, VA. This past trip I decided to open up an evening for a few mini photosessions! Oh what fun we had! Thanks to all of my Lynchburg friends and family for the support!

I can't believe that my sweet Whitaker is going to be 1 in less than 2 weeks! The days of me sneaking into his room during nap time, just to drink in his scent are drifting away faster than I like. Oh my sweet boy, slow down!

Here is the second sweet little one that I got to photograph during the 2011 snow storm. His name is Hudson! His mommy and daddy drove in the yucky weather to my Suwanee portrait studio so we could capture some great images of him! Hudson is going to make me into one of the worlds famous photographers someday, I just know it. He was such a great little model! Lovin these baby pics!

I was so very priviledged to meet two sweet newborn baibes during the great snow storm of 2011! Here is my first sweet model, Reeves! I love photographing babies! It is truely photographic bliss to me! Newborn babies sleep so soundly and Reeves was a champ! She allowed me to do several different poses and was happy the whole time. babies, babies, babies... I love!

Little Reece is growing up so fast! She is one of the most alert 3 moth olds that I think I have photographed. 3 month old babies are not usually able to look directly into my lens and give me a smile like Reece did. They usually don't have that great of control over there eyes yet. Reece is a champ! Love my little model!

LYNCHBURG VA MINI SESSIONS - FAMILY PICTURES

I am so excited! During my visit to my old stomping grounds in Lynchburg Va, I am offering a few mini sessions.

How does a mini session differ from a full session?

A regular photo sessions usually last an hour and a half to two hours in length and at the location of your choice. Mini sessions are conducted at a specific location and are 20 minutes in length.

May I book multiple mini sessions together?

You may book more than one session in a row. In fact, it is recommended that you book multiple sessions if you have three or more children. Mini sessions are good for a group of 5 people or less.

What is the cost of the mini session?

The cost is $100 and will be due at the time of your scheduled session.

How do I sign up for a mini session?

Email me: victoriakphotography@mac.com Please let me know the number of children that will be in the mini session and their ages. Also, please include your mailing address and phone number.

What if it rains or the weather is bad on the day of our mini session?

In case of inclement weather, mini photo sessions will be cancelled. Since I don't live in Lynchburg, it will be too tough to try and reschedule. :( However, I am going to try to make this a regular event each time I come into town for a visit!

When will I receive my pictures/CD?

Please allow at least 3 weeks for editing. Your pictures will then be mailed to you to the address provided in your email.

What to wear?

Select clothing that’s poppy, vibrant and fun! Choose colors that are deep, rich and intense! Use patterns, textures and layers to add visual interest. Textured fabrics, such as denim, cable knits, linen, and corduroy, photograph beautifully. Layers can be added and removed to create different looks in minimal time. When it comes to jeans, opt for the darkest indigo wash. These tend to be the most flattering and least dated looking. Think funky ties, scarves, jeans, cute hats, boots, button up shirts for boys. For girls, think whispy dresses over leggings or jeans and a cute shirt, maybe she wants to rock a tie too! Most importantly, we want everyone to be casual and comfortable in their attire.

What to bring?

All family members well napped and well fed! Any favorite dolly, teddy bear, car or blankie! Baby wipes! A snack cup with your childs (or husbands) favorite snack or candy! (keep this part a secret)

When to arrive?

On-time of course! Please don’t be late as this will put us behind schedule. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early.

For all of you parents out there, I want you to know that my toughest job is photographing my own children! It is very hard for me to be mommy & photographer all in one. My first priority is mommy, and so when a nose starts to run, I have to put my camera down to wipe it, when a tear starts to fall, I have to put my camera down to catch it, and when a little one needs tickling to bring on the smiles, I have to put my camera down and get my fingers movin....and then when the smile flashes....woops...where is my camera? On the ground! So, be easy on yourselves....It is difficult, even for us professionals, to photograph our own children! Can I get an AMEN fellow photogs!
Below are a few shots of my 6 month old. Trust me, we worked hard for these!

THE LITTLE THINGS - HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH THEM! - PHOTOGRAPH

I really love to photograph the little things! Little fingers, chubby feet! They are so precious and they change so fast! Sometimes photographing babies hands and feet can be a challange! Especially the older they get, babies can move pretty quick, causing your photo to blur! Having a good amount of light is key...but a trick is to give the child someting to hold onto...to slow them down! Choose something that is pretty in and of itself! Below is Violet! We gave her a pretty pinecone to explore. The pinecone slowed this clapping, happy 9 month old enough for me to photograph her tiny fingers and toes! Enjoy the little things!

When we first stepped foot on these beaches, we thought for sure we would be blown away! The winds were crazy and while everyone else was packing up their kids and fleeing the sceen, we were pulling out the swimsuit and sunglasses! We will let you laugh now! I am glad that we took the risk! The winds calmed down and we ended up with some great images! Oh the adventures of Photography!

Ok! Here's a tip! Guys and Gals, please spoil each other on special ocations! This husband (pictured below) hired me to come photograph he and his wife dancing in the park for thier four year anniversary! It was a total surprise to her! How sweet! Husband of the Year! Right Ladies!?

QUESTIONS ANSWERED - LENS FLARE

Hey Guys & Gals, one of my clients had a great question for me and I thought I would share. I bet it might be helpful for all of your shutterbugs! Read Below:

Dear Kathleen,
I didn't know who else to ask .....often when i take pictures outside with our DSL cannon -- i get this spot on my photos, never notice it inside. I have tried cleaning both lens incase it was something on it. No visible scratches or anything on the lens. I sent a picture as an example. It is starting to annoy me so I thought i would check with you in case you would know.

Hey Krista! That is called a lens flare and if used correctly, it could add a really artistic quality to your photos. It happens when the sun is reflecting off of your lens. See the hexagon-ish shape, that is actually the shape of your lens. The way to avoid it is to take the photo with the sun to your back and on your subjects face, or let the sun hit your subject from the side. Mid-Day when the sun is highest and hottest it's hard to get good shots because if the sun is on your subjects face, they will be squinting. Whenever the sun is directly coming into your lens, it will give you a lens flare and make your subjects face shadowed, like in the photo you sent me. I know with kids, you want to snap your shots whenever the moment happens. You will have better luck with your lighting later in the PM (before sunset). You can also purchase something called a lens hood. This will cut down on the flare most of the time!

The way you can do lens flare artistically is to slightly angle your camera so the sun is hitting it in the corner of the lens rather than directly in the center. I have attached a sample photo.
